We're based in Tauranga, roughly 50 minutes south, so we won't pretend Waihi Beach gets the same same-day turnaround as the city. Waihi Beach is proper bach country: original 1960s and '70s holiday cribs standing a few doors down from serious new beach houses, right along the strip from Bowentown at the southern end, through the main beach, up to Athenree on the harbour side. Older baches tend to have aluminium joinery from decades of coastal weather, tired glazing rubbers and hardware that's had a hard life in the salt air. The newer builds lean the other way: big sliders facing the surf, frameless balustrades on decks and stairs to keep the view, and glass showers replacing whatever came before.
