We're honest about this one: First Glass Solutions is based in Tauranga, and Whakamarama Road climbs away from SH2 into the hills between Te Puna and Omokoroa, a bit further out than our home patch. But we're on that stretch of highway all the time for jobs up the coast at Katikati and beyond, so turning off at Whakamarama Road for a cracked pane or a broken shed window isn't out of our way. It's a normal part of the run. We don't treat a small rural job here as too minor or too remote to bother with. Standard glass work out here is usually same-day, and at worst it slots into the same day we're already passing through on another job.

The properties up this road are a real mix, and they change character as you climb from the highway frontage into the hills. Down near SH2 and around Plummers Point and Pahoia there are established lifestyle blocks and holiday-style homes looking back over the harbour, some decades old, some rebuilt more recently. Further up Whakamarama Road itself you get older farmhouses that have been on the land a long time alongside newer rural-style builds going in on smaller subdivided blocks. Aluminium ranch sliders and older timber-framed windows both show up regularly across that mix, and both fail the same ordinary ways: a cracked pane from a stray cricket ball or a ute door backing into a window, a slider that's dropped in its track, glazing rubber gone brittle after years in the sun and salt air off the harbour.

It's also genuinely rural country once you're off the highway. Orchards run along parts of this corridor, glasshouses and sheds are common on the bigger blocks, and bush edges the properties higher up toward the Kaimai foothills. That means glass cut to size for a shed window, a cold frame or a glasshouse pane is regular work for us, not a special order we have to think twice about. Every rural property up this way seems to have a dog or two roaming the section, so pet doors fitted into an existing glass door or panel come up often as well, and we can usually fit one in a single visit. Where newer builds have gone in, we're doing the same shower screens and glass balustrades we'd fit anywhere else, sized to make the most of a hill or harbour view.
