Can You Just Replace the Glass, or Do You Need a New Door?
In most cases you only need the glass replaced, not the entire door and frame. As long as the aluminium frame is structurally sound and the rollers and track are in good condition, we can remove the damaged glass panel and install new toughened safety glass in its place.
Full door replacement is only necessary when the frame is damaged, bent, or so old that matching replacement glass is not practical. We will advise you honestly at the quote stage whether a glass-only repair is viable or whether a full replacement makes more sense.
What Type of Glass Is Used in Ranch Sliders?
All replacement glass in ranch sliders must comply with AS/NZS 2208 safety glass standards. This is not optional. Standard float glass is not permitted in ranch sliders because when it breaks it shatters into large dangerous shards.
Two types of safety glass are used:
- Toughened glass, heat-treated to be four to five times stronger than standard glass. When it breaks it shatters into small blunt fragments rather than sharp shards. This is the most common choice for ranch slider replacement.
- Laminated glass, two sheets of glass bonded with a plastic interlayer. When it breaks the fragments stay bonded to the layer. Used where additional security or sound reduction is needed.
The type and thickness of glass required depends on the size of the panel and the location, a glazier will specify the correct glass to meet the NZ Building Code.
What If Your Ranch Slider Is Double Glazed and Has Fogged Up?
Fogging between the panes means the sealed unit has lost its edge seal and moisture has got into the cavity. It will not clean off from either side and it cannot be resealed, so the unit itself has to be replaced.
The door does not. As long as the aluminium frame, the track and the rollers are sound, we measure the panel, order a sealed unit to match and fit it into the frame you already have, and the door slides exactly as it did before, glass repairs. Ranch slider units are large, so they are made to order rather than pulled off a shelf.
If one unit has fogged it is worth looking at the others while we are there. Where a house was double glazed in one go, the units tend to reach the end of their life at roughly the same time.
Can You Upgrade a Single Glazed Ranch Slider to Double Glazing?
Yes, but not by fitting a double glazed unit into the door you already have. A single glazed slider frame is not built to carry a sealed unit, so the upgrade is a new door: new joinery made for double glazing, fitted to the existing opening.
That makes it a bigger job than a glass replacement and it is priced differently. If the glass has simply broken, replacing the glass in the existing door is the faster and cheaper fix. If you are chasing the heat loss, the condensation and the road noise, the new door is the version that delivers it. We will price both at the measure so you can see the difference before you decide.
How Long Does Ranch Slider Glass Replacement Take?
For a standard single glazed panel where we have the glass in stock, same-day or next-day installation is often possible. The actual installation takes one to two hours on site.
For double glazed units or unusual sizes, the glass needs to be custom cut and toughened first. This typically takes two to five working days from measure to installation.
